Prosecutors: Children were injured by mother

464x261

3/15/15

A 20-year-old Chicago mother of three young children was ordered held in lieu of $200,000 bail Sunday after prosecutors said her kids were found with various broken bones and other injuries.

Destinee M. Hobson, of the 7000 block of South Harper Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, was charged with aggravated battery to a child under 13, which authorities were alerted to Thursday, according to Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Walsh and court records.

The father of the children — boys 17 months and 5 weeks; and a 21/2-year-old girl — found the 17-month-old with bruises on his arm and chest Wednesday, according to Walsh.

The father called Illinois Department of Child and Family Services on Thursday, and the department contacted police, Walsh said.

Police knocked on the door of the residence but no one answered, according to Walsh.

Officers eventually knocked down the door and found clothing and vomit on the floor, as well as the three unsupervised children, Walsh said.

Hobson was later found hiding under the stairs, Walsh said.

3-month-old suffers brain bleed, fractured clavicle; Kenner father arrested

Police arrested a Kenner father accused of causing grave injuries to his 3-month-old son. Anthony Hamilton, 25, of 4221 Florida Ave., was booked with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile Thursday (March 19), said Lt. Brian McGregor, spokesman for the Kenner Police Department.

Hamilton is considered the baby's primary caregiver because the boy's mother works full-time, McGregor said. She has not been arrested, but detectives are still investigating the case.

The infant's mother took the boy to Children's Hospital in New Orleans on Thursday evening after noticing something was wrong. The baby couldn't keep down any formula, McGregor said.

Doctors performed an MRI and determined the baby was suffering from bleeding on the brain that was consistent with shaken baby syndrome. They found signs of a previous brain bleed that was in the healing stages.

But doctors also discovered other injuries that were in the process of healing: a fractured clavicle and several puncture wounds that resembled fingernail impressions, McGregor said.

Hamilton and the boy's mother at first told investigators that they had no idea how the baby could have been injured. Hamilton said he had noticed the boy's eyes roll back during a diaper change, but the infant roused when pinched, according to McGregor.

LAKE CHARLES, La. — A 26-year-old Louisiana woman has been accused of burning an 8-year-old's hands and tying her to a bed while the woman went to work and slept.

Kerrian Javana Clofer of Lake Charles was charged Friday with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and false imprisonment, according to Calcasieu Parish sheriff's deputies.

After being called to a hospital Thursday, deputies said, they found the girl with severe burns on her hands and marks all over her body. The girl accused Clofer of holding her hands over the open flame of a gas stove after she ate a snack without permission.

The victim also told detectives Clofer handcuffed and tied her to the legs of a bed while Clofer slept and went to work.

The girl said she was not allowed to eat for days and, when she was allowed to eat, Clofer fed her noodles with salt and pepper. Clofer beat her with a belt and a metal clothes hanger, police said.

A news release from the sheriff's office did not disclose the relationship between Clofer and the child.

Lawyer: Man who fractured baby's skull never 'intended to hurt anyone'

5/15/15

The attorney for a man accused of fracturing a baby's skull with a piece of concrete said his client never intended to hurt anyone :cool:when he threw the chunk through the window of a home in Englewood.

"It's a tragedy (but) there's no evidence he ever intended to hurt anyone," said Nicholas Giordano, attorney for Jeremy O'Neal, 25. "We just hope the baby's OK. Nobody ever had any intention of hurting a child."

Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered O'Neal held on $150,000 bail on one count of aggravated battery to a child under 13 causing permanent disability.

O'Neal had gone to a home in the 1400 block of West 73rd Place around 8:25 p.m. on May 3 and demanded to see a 19-year-old woman who sometimes lived there, according to the baby's mother and police.

Janica Lee, the mother of 7-month-old Jamyah Lee, said she heard O'Neal step onto the front porch of her home and begin "yelling and screaming" at her father.

"He said, 'OK, since she's not here, you're all fitting to pay for this,'" Lee said.

O'Neal left, returned minutes later, exchanged more words with Lee's father and then tossed the piece of concrete through a window, Lee said.

"All I heard is the glass breaking and my baby screaming," she said. "I just stood there and froze."

Family members found the 7-month-old inside a bedroom with a head wound and the brick laying next to her.
They called 911 and Jamyah was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital.

Jamyah was released two days later. Doctors told Lee her daughter had suffered two fractures and there was bleeding on her brain. Jamyah will likely have to take medication to prevent seizures, Lee said.

O'Neal, who court records show has a lengthy arrest record, was taken into custody Thursday.

The judge ordered O'Neal not to have any contact with the woman he was trying to find that night.

Utah teen arrested for child abuse after infant daughter rushed to hospital
Posted 2:55 pm, May 13, 2015

father-arrested-for-child-abuse.jpeg

WEST HAVEN, Utah – A West Haven teen is in jail after his 2-month-old daughter was taken to the hospital for injuries from alleged child abuse that included a brain injury and multiple fractures.

According to a statement of probable cause, the infant’s mother said the father, 18-year-old Mark Berry, was put in charge of watching the baby for about 30 minutes.

When the mother came home, she noticed the child was twitching and seemed to be having a seizure. The child was taken to McKay Dee Hospital, and after a CT scan revealed bleeding in the baby’s brain the child was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital.

Berry did not go to the hospital with the child, but he was later located and he admitted he was frustrated and “forcefully” put the child in a swinging chair twice, according to a statement of probable cause. The statement indicates Berry admitted to police “that he knew his actions would likely cause injury to the child.”

The 4-week-old infant boy whose mother is accused of cracking his skull with punches to the head is in foster care with a sibling, authorities said Friday, and the county's child-welfare agency is investigating the assault.

Peek Gaddis, 22, of Colerain Township is in the Hamilton County Justice Center charged with second-degree felonious assault. Hamilton County Job and Family Services is investigating the incident, said spokesman Brian Gregg.

Gregg said the agency had two earlier contacts with Gaddis, in 2010 and 2013. He said he could not release more information because the law shields child welfare cases.

Gaddis has two other children, Gregg said. The infant and another child are in foster care, and the third child is with the father.

Police said Gaddis, a nurse's aide, acknowledged Wednesday that she punched the baby several times May 10 when Gaddis after becoming frustrated because the baby's cries interrupted her sleep, court records said. The punches left bone fractures including at least one to the skull that triggered a bleed on the brain.

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Pinellas Park Police are looking for a man they say severely beat an 11-month-old boy.

31-year-old Glen Franklin Neal Jr. is accused of kicking and/or punching the boy
at the boy's Pinellas Park home on July 5, 2015.

Police say the baby had been crying and it's likely Neal became frustrated and used physical force to try to calm him.

The boy is at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg where he's being treated for severe head injuries including bleeding on the brain.

The boy's mother was home at the time of the alleged incident but told police she was in another room and didn't know anything about the abuse. Police tell ABC Action News the boy's mother is not suspected of abuse but do think someone has used forced on the boy in the past.

Mother arrested, accused of using iron, power drill to abuse her two children

DENVER -- Her pictures show Kinyaita Davis took good care of herself. :rolleyes:Police say the same cannot be said for her two children.

“This is hard on us,” said her sister, who asked not to be identified.

She described the dark secrets and severe abuse that police say started when Davis’ two children were toddlers. They are ages 11 and 12. It was the sister who turned in Davis.

“It was a hard decision doing what I did for the kids. But, at the same time, it was easier for what I've seen personally as far as bruises and burns,” she said.

Police said the sister said both children made "outcry to her" of extensive physical abuse over five years. On one occasion, the son claimed his mother placed an iron against his shoulder and pushed the steam button, causing a large burn.

Worse, police say the daughter still has scars from when she was 8 years old. She told them it was from the mother driving a power drill though her hand as she tried to cover her face.

Police say when the children didn't clean house, Davis punished them by beating them with a belt. When that didn't work, she steamed them with the iron. Neighbors never suspected anything, but the family says Denver Health and Denver Health and Human Services did.

Coon arrested in turdler's beating death

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) - A turdler has died after police say the nigger who was supposed to look after him beat him to death.

Police say Duarte Jeremiah Fayne beat 19-month-old Jasper so badly his brain swelled.

The turdler’s mom, Pamela Walker, said she, her two young sons and Fayne, her boyfriend, moved from Denver to Las Vegas to start a new life. She didn’t know her younger son’s life would end so brutally.

“I’m feeling saddened,” said Walker as she wiped the tears from her eyes and struggled to speak through her tears.

“I don’t know how to feel. I’m just so numb, devastated,” Walker said.

Jasper died last Friday. Police confirmed he was beaten to death.

According to the arrest report, Fayne severely beat Walker's little boy, fracturing his skull and causing his brain to swell.

Police said the turdler’s 5-year-old brother told police Fayne hit the turdler on the head and then threw him on the bed. The 5-year-old, at first, thought his little brother was dead. But the little sprog was still breathing.

Fayne insisted he didn’t do it, instead blaming Walker.

According to the report, Walker told her 5-year-old not to tell police what happened.

Fayne has been charged with murder in the child's death. He had been charged with attempted murder before the child died.

Parents arrested for beating death of 4-year-old girl

DECATUR – The parents of a 4-year-old girl who was beaten to death Wednesday are being held in jail after they were arrested in connection with her death.

The child, Amarrah C. Reynolds, who turned 4 on July 8, was brought into the emergency room at Decatur Memorial Hospital in an unresponsive state about 3:15 p.m. with “numerous areas of scabbing and bruising covering her entire body,” said a probable cause affidavit by Decatur police detective Erik Ethell.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:51 p.m.

Amarrah had a “concentrated area of healing and fresh wounds on the inside of her thigh,” the police statement said.

Darrell A. Reynolds, 29, the child's father, told police she had been acting up lately, and because placing her into “time out” lately was not working, “he began striking Amarrah with a black belt numerous times.”

He struck her so many times that he lost count of the blows, which included strikes to her head, body and legs with the belt, he told police.

Preliminary autopsy results showed that Amarrah died primarily as a result of head injuries. She suffered subdural hemorrhages, the medical term for bleeding in the brain, and multiple bruises consistent with blunt force trauma, said a news release from Macon County Coroner Michael E. Day. The autopsy was performed Thursday at the McLean County Morgue.

“The extensive injuries to the body are consistent with nonaccidental, inflicted trauma,” the release said.

Reynolds, who told police he deserves to die for killing his daughter, is being held on a $2 million bond on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide or manslaughter.

His formal charge will be determined by the Macon County State's Attorney's Office.

Amarrah's mother, Dalvon D. Taylor, is being held on a $500,000 bond on a preliminary charge of endangering the life of a child, resulting in death.

Taylor told police that Reynolds “has been abusing Amarrah for about two years,” Ethell wrote in his statement. She said the “abuse typically consisted of Darrell hitting Amarrah in the face and torso, hitting her forcefully with a belt numerous times, which caused welts to her arms, back, legs and torso.”

Reynolds also kicked the 4-year-old girl while she was lying on the floor, shoved her into a wall, lifted her off the ground by her neck and severely pinched her, the girl's mother told police.

Taylor told police that she woke up from a nap about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and went upstairs, where she saw Reynolds and the girl. Reynolds told her that Amarrah was “in a time out” and was holding a book on her head as a punishment.

At that time, Taylor “observed a fresh bruise on Amarrah's face.” Taylor then left the room to tend to her two sons. About one minute later, she heard Reynolds yelling. She returned to the living room, where she saw “Amarrah stumbling around, unable to maintain her balance.”

Taylor noticed that Amarrah seemed unable to focus her eyes. The child then fell to the floor. When her mother tried to pick her up, Reynolds “held her back, stating she was fine.”

The girl's mother noticed that Amarrah appeared to stop breathing, she told police. Reynolds then picked up Amarrah and began attempting to blow in her mouth, as he was saying, “sorry,” Taylor told police.

Taylor reported that she knew about the abuse but never reported it to police or the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

“Dalvon stated Darrell was also abusive towards her, which prevented her from reporting the abuse,” Ethell wrote in his statement.

Reynolds and Taylor are due in circuit court for their arraignments by Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Philadelphia Police homicide unit is investigating the “suspicious death” of a 2-year-old boy.

Authorities responded to the 600 block of East Clementine Street in Kensington around 11:51 p.m. for an unresponsive baby.

Police were met out front by a man and woman holding the child.

The baby was rushed to St. Christopher’s Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:10 a.m.

Police sources tell CBS 3 the boy’s body was covered in bruises and he suffered injuries to his ribs and liver. The boy’s mother and her boyfren' are being questioned.

“Anytime you have a death, anyone that’s present at the particular time police are notified or that may have been present at any point in time leading up to that, they would be questioned,” Lt. John Stanford said. “So that’s where we’re at right now.”

“I was just crying all day because it’s sad,” said Ebony Brunson, the mother’s aunt. “I just want to know what happened. That’s all I want to know.”

Tashanika Jewett, the boy’s godmother, said her godson was a very happy child.

“He always told everybody he loved them and he danced and he was happy,” Jewett said. “He was a happy little baby. That was it.”

She hopes police will quickly arrest whoever is responsible.

“It’s a sad story that nobody wants to see. He was loving. Everybody cared about him,” Jewett said.

A police spokesperson said the exact cause of death will come from the medical examiner’s office and that could take a few days.

A 7-month-old baby with bruises across his body died at a Brooklyn hospital Saturday morning – and cops are questioning the infant’s family, police sources said.

Dameen Mohammed was unconscious and unresponsive when his 25-year-old mother and grandmother took him to Lutheran Hospital at about 6:45 a.m., sources said.

Hospital staffers noticed the boy’s bruises and immediately phoned cops.

By the time police arrived, the baby was declared dead.

The boy was at his grandmother’s Bensonhurst home before he arrived at the hospital, police sources said.

The mother and grandmother appeared visibly upset as they were being questioned by cops inside the hospital waiting room Saturday morning.

The city medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The 7-month-old Staten Island boy whose mother brought him to the hospital more than 24 hours after he died was dehydrated and weighed a mere 8 pounds, police sources said Monday.

The city Medical Examiner’s Office determined that little Dameen Mohammed’s body did not have any signs of trauma but his condition may point to neglect, sources said. The average weight for a child his age is about 18 pounds. The baby experienced an “extreme weight loss” in just the last month, sources added.

A cause of death is pending further studies by the ME, sources said.

The baby wasn’t breathing when mom Anawar Jawad, 26, found him in his crib Saturday around 5 a.m. He was declared dead at Lutheran Medical Center around 6:30 a.m. His mother was questioned by cops.

City coroners are still examining the bruised, severely underweight body of a 7-month-old Staten Island boy — a week after his mother carried him lifeless into a hospital.

Final tests are still pending on what killed Dameen Mohammed, law enforcement sources told The Post.

Dameen weighed only eight pounds — less than half what he should have — and may have been dead for 24 hours when his mother, Anawar Jawad, 26, brought him to a Brooklyn hospital on Jan. 7, sources said.

The mother is not cooperating with the investigation.

Her other child, a 2-year-old girl, is in Administration for Children’s Services custody, a source told the Staten Island Advance.

The Brownsville home where a 4-year-old boy was found tenderized.

A 4-year-old boy with cuts and bruises across his body was discovered in a makeshift bathtub in Brooklyn, where he died early Thursday, police said.

Cops were called to a basement apartment on Riverdale Avenue near Amboy Street in Brownsville at around 9 p.m. Wednesday where they found Zamair Cooms lying in a plastic storage bin that was filled with water, police said.

It appeared that Zamair’s 26-year-old mom walked away to tend to one or both of the other chilluns, leaving Zamair unattended in the tub, police said.

When the boy’s 26-year-old step-father returned home, he found the boy lying in the bin with his head submerged under the water and called 911, officials said.

Cooms was still alive when he was rushed to Brookdale Hospital but died early Thursday morning. It was there doctors discovered the numerous injuries on the boy’s body. He was pronounced dead at 2:35 a.m. Thursday sources said.

The Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy.

Cooms’ mother and stepfather are currently being questioned by police, who said they were not immediately aware if the family had a history with the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.

Mom tells cops she beat toddler son to death with broomstick

A cruel Brooklyn mom confessed to beating her 4-year old son with a broomstick, and then leaving him to die in a makeshift bathtub, police sources said Thursday.

Zarah Coombs was arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, acting in a manner injurious to a child and possession of a weapon after admitting to investigators that she had repeatedly struck little Zamair with the broom before he died, sources said.

Coombs, 26, made the confession while cops were grilled her and Zamair’s stepdad at the 73rd Precinct after police made the horrific discovery.

Police were called to the family’s basement apartment on Riverdale Avenue near Amboy Street in Brownsville at around 9 p.m. Wednesday where they found Zamair unconscious and unresponsive in the large water-filled plastic storage bin, police said.

It appeared that Zamair’s 26-year-old mom walked away to tend to one or both of her two other young children, leaving Zamair unattended in the container, police said.

When the boy’s 26-year-old step-father returned to the two-story brick home, he found the boy lying in the bin with his head submerged under the water and called 911, officials said.

Zamair was still alive when emergency responders rushed him to Brookdale Hospital, but was pronounced dead early Thursday morning at 2:35 a.m., cops said.

It was at the hospital where doctors discovered the numerous injuries on the boy, including abrasions to his neck and bruising to different areas about his body, sources said.

The Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine Zamair’s cause of death.

Police were not immediately aware if the family had a history with the city’s Administration for Children’s Services.

While the mom and step-dad were being questioned by police, ACS workers removed the other two children from the home – a one-month-old and a one-year-old, cops said.

An ACS spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.

DOI demands child-welfare records after mom fatally beats toddler
By Rich Calder and Natalie Musumeci

The Department of Investigation wants all records from the city’s child-welfare agency involving the family of a 4-year-old Brooklyn boy who died early Thursday after his mom allegedly beat him with a broomstick.

Little Zamair Coombs’ 26-year-old mother, Zarah Coombs, confessed to police that she attacked the boy in their Brownsville home and left him unconscious in a makeshift tub before he passed away at Brookdale Hospital at 2:35 a.m., police sources said.

The mother was charged with murder, manslaughter, acting in a manner injurious to a child and possession of a weapon.

The city’s Administration for Children’s Services had two previous cases with the family in 2015 – one for failure to provide medical care and another for inadequate supervision, a source familiar with the cases said, but both were determined to be unfounded.

Officials confirmed that DOI has put in a request to the state Office of Children and Family Services for access to all records from the embattled child-welfare agency regarding ACS’s previous involvement with Zamair’s family.

An ACS spokesperson said, “We are deeply saddened by the death of Zamair, and commend the New York City Police Department on quickly making an arrest in this case. As we conduct our investigation along with the NYPD, we await the findings from the Medical Examiner’s Office.”

DOI is already investigating the deaths of children Zymere Perkins, 6, Michael Guzman, 5, Jaden Jordan, 3, and at least five others.

A scathing report of DOI’s preliminary findings into Jordan’s death was released Thursday.
