First Case Of Cholera Confirmed In Miami-Dade

MIAMI -- The Miami-Dade County Health Department is confirming a passenger who became ill on a flight to Miami on Thanksgiving did in fact have cholera.

That American Airlines flight came from the Dominican Republic.

The man was a doctor who had been treating cholera patients.

Cholera is a bacterial infection of the intestine that generally spreads through contaminated food or water.

This is the third confirmed case of the bacterial infection in Florida. A Collier County woman and another woman from the Orlando area were the other two cases. Both women have also recovered.
