Butts County sheriff announces arrest in 1999 homicide case

The Texas man accused in the death of a woman whose body was found dumped along a Butts County road in 1999 appeared in court Monday to hear the charges read against him.

#Fuquah Dewalt Cashaw, 44, is charged with kidnapping and murder in the death of Heather Danielle Davidson.

#Davidson, of Stockbridge, was 22 when her body was found along Kermit Williams Road. Investigators said she had been strangled.

Butts County Sheriff Gary Long on Sunday announced the arrest in the case that is now more than 15 years old but had recently gotten a fresh look from investigators. One of Davidson’s roommates was initially charged in the case but according to published reports, a Butts County grand jury declined to issue an indictment. Long said thanks to newer DNA technology and exhaustive case work, investigators are now confident Cashaw is responsible.

#Long said Cashaw was working as a fabricator at a welding shop in Pearland, Texas, prior to his arrest. He said Cashaw was arrested at work by officers of the U.S. Marshals Service Feb. 17 and waived extradition proceedings.

#Cashaw has been held in the Butts County Jail since late Friday night.

Tuesday's arrest wasn't the first time Cashaw has been in trouble with the law. Cook County, Illinois, court records show in 1990 he was found guilty of murder and second-degree murder. In 2003 he was found guilty of unlawful use of weapon, and in 2004 he was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and concealment of a homicidal death.

A man convicted in a 1990 murder was charged this week with suffocating his girlfriend two years ago and leaving her body to rot inside a Chicago parking garage.

Cook County Judge Matthew Coghlan on Friday set bail at $750,000 for Fuquah D. Cashaw, 34, of 9112 S. Greenwood, charged with first- degree murder in the Jan. 25, 2002, slaying of Marguerite Czarnecki.

Charges were filed this week after an unidentified person went to Czarnecki's son, saying he'd overheard Cashaw confess to the killing, prosecutors said. The son then went to police.

When confronted, Cashaw allegedly provided investigators with a 17- page confession.

In court on Friday, Cook County assistant state's attorney Mercedes Luque-Rosales described how Cashaw and Czarnecki, 31, began an argument over money in their Riverdale home that allegedly ended with Cashaw shoving the woman's head against a wall and pressing his hand hard over her face. …
