Brampton woman's accused killer had history of violating restraining orders

The man facing charges in a deadly Brampton shooting earlier this week had a history of illegal firearm possession, and was under a court order barring contact with his alleged victim.

Darnell Reid, 27
, of Brampton — who remains in a Toronto trauma centre in critical condition — faces charges of second-degree murder, possession of a loaded firearm and two counts of fail to comply with a release order in connection with the shooting death of Darian Hailey Henderson-Bellman, 25.

On Tuesday, police responded to a shooting at a home in the area of Fairglen Ave. and Deerpark Cres. — near Vodden Rd. and Williams Pkwy.

Once there, police located Henderson-Bellman and Reid — both suffering from gunshot wounds.

Henderson-Bellman was pronounced dead at the scene while Reid was rushed to hospital.

The victim and the accused had been in a relationship for around three years.

At the time of the killing, Reid was under judicial release stemming from a previous domestic violence incident between the pair and was under orders not to be in contact with her — an order he’d been arrested four times previously for violating.

Police also said Reid had a history of illegal firearms possession.

In May, Reid was arrested on an unrelated matter for possessing an illegal firearm, said Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah.

“After only six days in custody, this accused, who regularly ignored his conditions of release, and continued to offend by possessing illegal firearms, was released back into the community with a GPS monitoring device,” he said.

“This was despite clear concerns regarding his risk to the victim, the community and the potential to continue to re-offend.”

Duraiappah said both police and the victim’s family “struggled to keep her safe” and he blamed the courts for their role in the young woman’s death.

“In this incident, the sadness I feel for the victim and her family is mixed with frustration for a complete failure of our justice system to protect her,” he said.

“This resulted in another life being taken by a violent offender with another illegal firearm. This unacceptable failure is becoming entirely too familiar in our communities.

“Collectively, we need to do better,” Duraiappah said.
