A taxi driver trying to escape a carjacking Sunday night was dragged several blocks when his leg got caught in the seatbelt of his cab, police said.

Misbah Muhammed, 44, was dragged along Peachtree Road as the carjacker erratically drove the cab, sideswiping other cars, knocking down a utility pole and plowing through two concrete shrubbery planters, police
said.

Muhammed was not seriously injured. The alleged carjacker, Christopher Martin, 25, was wrestled into submission by a security guard at a downtown nightclub when he tried to run from the car.<b

driver for Checker Cab, stopped to pick up a fare at 13th and Crescent streets Sunday night.

Police said the passenger, identified as Martin, said he needed to go to the Hyatt Regency Hotel downtown and jumped into the front seat of the cab and pulled out a knife.

Muhammed was being forced out of the cab when his leg caught in the seat belt, police said.

Martin drove two blocks down Peachtree Street, hitting two cars near Andrew Young Boulevard. The seven-page police report on the incident said that the impact of a sideways collision between the cab and a Honda Civic left a trail of blood on the passenger side of the Civic where Muhammed's body bumped against it.

The cab then lost control near the old Macy's dep
artment store building, plowing through two shrubbery planters, a UPS package drop-off box and a utility pole.

Mark Elingburg, 21, from Clemson, S.C., was struck by the pole as it hit th

. He compl
ained of leg pains but his injuries were minor.

When th
e cab came to a stop near Ellis Street, Martin began running west. He pulled out his knife when a security guard for the Level 3 club, located nearby, accosted him. The guard, Amen Webster, overpowered him and handcuffed him.

When police arrived, Martin told them he had consumed a large amount of heroin and Xanax, said Atlanta police Sgt. John Quigley.

Martin was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, carjacking, armed robbery, criminal damage to property, reckless conduct, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, driving with a suspended license, failure to stop and render aid and felony hit-and-run.

Muhammed suffered numerous visible injuries, Quigley said. His hand was bleeding and c
omplained of severe chest pain. His injuries, however, were not considered life-threatening.
