Robbers Use Swords In Bank Heist

Think of a bank robbery and an armed man with a mask and a gun come to mind.

The masks were there on Monday but the guns weren't. Instead the pair that walked into the TD-Canada Trust branch near Kipling and Steeles were armed with something you rarely see - two ceremonial swords.

The rapier bandits came in just after 9am, demanding cash, which they received at sword point from a teller. They then rushed out, brandishing the weapons and disappeared. Cops were able to recover some cash and the giant blades but despite an extensive search of the neighbourhood, the robbers who wielded them scrambled into a ravine and vanished.

A witness recalls seeing one of the men use the point to make one of his own, chopping at the counter as he demanded the teller hurry up with the money. It's not clear how much they may have received before their escape.

But this wasn't a perfect caper - a dye pack hidden in the cash exploded after the suspects fled, and they dropped some of it as they ran from the branch.

Police are looking for two men, but their descriptions are limited because they were both masked. One was a black male in his 20s, weighing around 130-150 lbs. The other is said to have only a light complexion.

No one was hurt in the robbery but cops want to know who these sword-swinging desperados are and put a halt to their hilts. If you know them, call (416) 808-2300 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS.
