A man sought in a San Fernando Valley murder and robbery was arrested in a chaotic pursuit and carjacking that left one person dead after the victim was dragged by his own SUV for more than two miles on an Inglewood street.
The deadly chain of events began as police were conducting a surveillance operation on the wanted man in the 5900 block of 7th Avenue. Detectives watched the man get into the passenger side of a vehicle and leave the area. A short pursuit began after officers tried to get the driver to pull over, police said. The brief chase ended in a crash at Florence and Haas avenues in Inglewood.

"The murder suspect got out of the passenger side and carjacked another vehicle," police said in a statement. "The murder suspect drove away from Florence Avenue and Haas Avenue, dragging the carjacking victim."
The carjacking victim, entangled in a seatbelt, was dragged on the street for more than two mile before he was dislodged, police said.
Tina Atkins, who was picking up her children at an after-school program, described a horrifying scene.
"We just saw a car coming straight at us with a dead body hanging out of the bottom," Atkins said. "I hopped the curb with my kids in the car because I didn't want them to hit me."
Atkins' car and an undercover police vehicle were struck during the chase.
The pursuit ended when the driver crashed near East Florence Avenue and North Prairie Avenue, near Edward Vincent Jr. Park. The SUV flipped, but the man refused to exit, leading to a standoff near a cemetery.
A SWAT team responded and the man eventually surrendered nearly two hours later.
The victim was found on the street about three houses south of where his stolen SUV flipped and came to rest. Details about the man's identity were not immediately available.
He died at the scene.
The suspect was wanted in a killing during the robbery of a Reseda-area jewelry store. Joshua Reneau, 31, was expected to be booked on suspicion of murder after he was treated for a severe facial injury he sustained during the pursuits and wrecks.
The driver who crashed the other vehicle was also taken into custody, according to police.
According to law enforcement officials, Reneau was wanted for the July 29 robbery and shooting at a tattoo and marijuana business on Sherman Way near Reseda Boulevard, where two men were shot and a security guard returned gunfire. The victims, who survived their gunshot wounds, told police three men had robbed them, and about an hour after the gunfight officers responded to another call in the 18300 block of Saticoy Street in Reseda and found a shooting victim in what also was believed to be a jewelry robbery.
The 32-year-old man later died at a hospital.
Early Thursday morning, LAPD officers and FBI agents arrested two others suspected of being involved in the July holdups and shootings. Operations Valley Bureau Homicide Detectives arrested 28-year-old Derek Hall, of West Covina, and 20-year-old, Miracole Brown, of South Los Angeles, on suspicion of robbery and murder. Bail was set at $2 million.
Later that day, detective obtained a murder arrest warrant for Reneau.
A court date was scheduled for Monday.
Court and jail records show Reneau was charged on Sept. 15 with violating the terms of his Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) that stemmed from a prior conviction.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect who allegedly dragged a carjacking victim to death during a police chase in Los Angeles Thursday night is also linked to a fatal shooting and robbery in Reseda this summer, police say.
Joshua Reneau, 31, of Los Angeles was arrested after a violent police chase through the Hyde Park and Inglewood areas that involved several crashes and a deadly carjacking.
The first chase started when police were following Reneau as the passenger in a vehicle for his suspected involvement in a robbery and shooting of three people in Reseda that happened three months ago.
Earlier Thursday morning, officers had arrested two other suspects in connection with the Reseda incident and obtained a murder arrest warrant for Reneau.
Detectives were watching his home in the 5900 block of 7th Avenue when they saw him get into the back of a car that then drove away.

A marked LAPD unit tried to pull the car over, but it fled.

During that first chase, the fleeing car soon collided with another vehicle.
Reneau then allegedly jumped out from the passenger side and carjacked an SUV but the driver became entangled in his seatbelt and was dragged alongside his own vehicle for nearly two miles as Reneau continued to flee, police say.
Inglewood resident Ron Holloway saw the end of the chase unfold near his home. He heard sirens and helicopters and then saw a large SUV driving off Florence Avenue and onto his own street, dragging a body "like a rag doll."
"And I'm seeing he's dragging a body" Holloway recalled. "The body kind of just bounces over the curb there and he shoots full speed down the street."

The SUV drove down the street, but hit a dead end and had to turn around. That's when the carjacking victim's body was dislodged and left on the ground. Paramedics later pronounced him dead at the scene.
The SUV tried to drive past police units, but crashed and flipped over onto its side.
Police say the suspect refused to get out of the vehicle for about two hours. A standoff ensued and the SWAT team and K9 units were brought in but he was eventually taken into custody.
The suspect was being treated for injuries afterward. The deceased victim of the carjacking has not been identified, pending notification of his family.
The driver of the vehicle in the initial chase was arrested and has been identified as Jamal Sutherland, 34, of Los Angeles. He was booked for felony evading with no bail. A passenger in the vehicle, Neosha Reneau, 33, was booked on a misdemeanor warrant with her bail set at $1,000.
The Reseda incident involved a robbery and the shooting of three people on July 29.
Two people were reported shot and wounded in the 18500 block of Sherman Way just after midnight as part of a street robbery, targeting the victim for his jewelry.
A short time later, officers found a third shooting victim in the 18300 block of Saticoy Street. Paramedics brought that victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was later identified as Earl Hunter, 32.
Police say the incident involved three men - two of them armed with handguns - committing a street robbery, grabbing two necklaces from a victim.

Police later identified the suspects. Early Thursday of this week officers arrested Derek Hall, 28, of West Covina and Miracole Brown, 20, of South Los Angeles for murder and robbery, with bail set at $2 million. Police obtained a warrant for Reneau, and their attempts to arrest him ended with the chase and carjacking.

A SENIOR citizen has been violently killed after being dragged behind his own vehicle in a Thursday carjacking.

Larry Walker, 63,
was identified on Monday as the victim who was dragged for two miles underneath his SUV after his leg became caught in the seatbelt when his car was stolen.

Though the vehicle flipped, police were still in a two-hour standoff with Joshua Reneau, the alleged murder suspect, and carjacker

The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office of California announced that Walker died of homicide due to blunt force trauma, The LA Times reported.

At 5pm on Thursday, wanted murder suspect Joshua Reneau was seen by detectives just north of Inglewood and attempted to flee capture by jumping into the back seat of a Toyota Prius whose driver sped away aiding the escape, according to the outlet.

After a brief police pursuit, authorities said the Prius crashed.

Driver Jamal Sutherland, 34, was arrested for felony evasion while police think Reneau took this opportunity to steal Walker's SUV.

When Reneau forced Walker out of his car, the older man got caught in the seat belt and was dragged under the vehicle while the carjacker fled in the car, police allege.

Walker's car hit several police vehicles during the two-mile chase, and the car flipped over, forcing the pursuit to finally cease.

First responders pronounced Walker dead near the scene of the crash, The Times said.

Still, officers were in a standoff with Reneau for two hours before he would exit the vehicle.
Reneau was brought to the hospital for his crash injuries, and, in addition to the potential murder and car-jacking charges, he will face legal punishment for the death of Walker.

About 30,000 cars are stolen yearly in Los Angeles, according to the LAPD website.

"...A car is stolen every 23 seconds," said the FBI statistic reported on the site.

Inglewood: On July 29, 2022, around 12:00 a.m., West Valley Division patrol officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon radio call in the 18500 block of Sherman Way, near Reseda Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located two victims with gunshot wounds. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the victims to a local hospital, where they were treated and released. There were numerous shell casings inside the crime scene, which were fired from different handguns. Officers determined that a street robbery occurred. It was believed the victim was targeted for his jewelry.

At around 12:50 a.m., West Valley officers responded to an additional radio call at the 18300 block of Saticoy Street in Reseda and located a victim with a gunshot wound. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The victim was later identified as 32-year-old Earl Hunter.

Valley Bureau Homicide Detectives responded to both crime scenes and, through investigation, learned that the victims were confronted by three males, Black, who exited a grey, four-door sedan. Two of the suspects were armed with handguns. One of the suspects grabbed the victim’s two large necklaces. During the incident, the victim was shot.
Detectives determined that the above two incidents involved the same suspects.

On the morning of October 13, 2022, Operations Valley Bureau Homicide Detectives arrested 28-year-old Derek Hall (Booking No. 6482417), a resident of West Covina for 187 (A)PC- Murder and 20-year-old, Miracole Brown (Booking No.6482374), a resident of South Los Angeles for 187 (A)PC- Murder. Both were arrested for the robbery and murder, with a set bail of $2,000,000. Later that afternoon, detectives identified and obtained a murder arrest warrant for an additional suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Joshua Reneau, from Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Police Department, FBI Fugitive Taskforce conducted a surveillance operation at Reneau’s residence in the 5900 block of 7th Avenue, in an effort to effect an arrest. The officers observed Reneau enter the rear seat of a sedan, which then departed the residence. Uniformed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, driving a marked black and white police vehicle, followed the sedan and a pursuit ensued. During the pursuit, the sedan collided with another vehicle and became disabled.

Reneau exited the sedan and carjacked another vehicle. As he attempted to forcibly remove the driver from the car, the driver became entangled in the seatbelt. Reneau got into the driver seat and drove away in the victim’s car. The victim was dragged alongside his own car for over two miles. The pursuit continued for approximately three miles. Reneau collided with several police vehicles and ultimately flipped the car on its side in the area of Praire Avenue and Florence Avenue, in the City of Inglewood. The victim of the carjacking was located on the street about three houses south of where the car flipped and came to rest on North Osage Ave. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. His identity has not been released at this time.

Reneau barricaded himself inside the disabled car and initially refused to surrender. The Los Angeles Police Department SWAT officers responded to the scene and Reneau surrendered.

Reneau is currently in a local hospital and is pending booking for 187 (A)PC- Murder.
The driver of the vehicle, 34-year-old Jamal Sutherland (Booking No.6482727), a resident of Los Angeles, was booked for 2800.2 (A)VC-Felony Evading with no bail.
The passenger of the vehicle, 33-year-old Neosha Reneau (Booking No.6482738), a resident of Los Angeles, was booked for 25850 (A)PC- Misdemeanor warrant. Her bail was set at $1,000.

This case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. All suspects are due in Van Nuys court on Monday, October 17, 2022.

Details:

On January 25th, 2021, at 9:21 PM, Moreno Valley Station deputies were dispatched to the 11000 block of Ohio St. city of Moreno Valley, regarding a robbery at gunpoint. The victim was at the location to sell the female suspect a French bulldog through Craigslist. When the victim presented the French bulldog to the female suspect, a second male suspect exited the suspect vehicle and pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the victim. Both suspects entered the suspect vehicle, described as a Silver Mercedes Benz and drove away from the location.

Deputies canvassed the area but did not locate the suspects or suspect vehicle. Members of the Moreno Valley Station Robbery Burglary Suppression Team (RBST) immediately began working the case and collecting items of evidentiary value. Through an abundance of assistance from the public, as well as the Moreno Valley Citywide Camera System, the female suspect was identified as Serenity Gershon (20) from the city of Hawthorne. On January 27, 2021, RBST members served a search warrant at Gershon’s residence located in the 14000 block of Cerise Ave., city of Hawthorne. Several items related to the robbery were located and Gershon’s residence and Gershon was taken into custody without incident. Additionally, the male suspect from the robbery, Joshua Reneau (29) from the city of Hawthorne, was located and arrested without incident.

Gershon and Reneau were later booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center. It is believed Gershon and Reneau are responsible for several additional robberies of French bulldogs in the southern California area. RBST would like to remind the public that the Moreno Valley Sheriff’s Station has a dedicated safe exchange location in the parking lot of the station. This spot should be utilized for all safe exchanges. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Moreno Valley Station RBST Deputy Mark Hardin at 951-486-6700.

Family of man killed by suspect fleeing LAPD demands investigation into police actions

Larry Walker’s relatives want to know why a homicide suspect LAPD officers had under surveillance was allowed to carjack a vehicle.
The family of a Los Angeles man who was dragged to death during a carjacking nearly two weeks ago is calling for a police investigation into his senseless killing.
As reported by The Los Angeles Times, the incident occurred on Sunday, Oct. 16 during a police chase of homicide suspect Joshua Reneau, 31, who was wanted in connection with two shootings. A fugitive pursuit team was surveilling Reneau at a home near Inglewood when he was spotted leaving the residence and getting into the back seat of a Toyota Prius.
When plainclothes LAPD officers tried to pull over the car, driver Jamal Sutherland, 34, sped away, and a police chase ensued for several blocks before the car crashed near Florence and Haas avenues in Inglewood.

Reneau jumped out and fled the scene, and that’s when he encountered Larry Walker, 63, who was sitting in the driver’s seat of his gray SUV. Reneau forced Walker out of the vehicle, but Walker became entangled in the seat belt, and police said he was dragged underneath the car for more than two miles.
Reneau crashed the SUV into several police cars and flipped over. Despite being injured in the crash, he kept officers in a stand-off for hours before surrendering.
Walker, a father of three, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Walker’s family is trying to understand why Reneau was allowed to carjack a vehicle when officers had him under surveillance. Had police moved more quickly to arrest the man as he was leaving the house, they assert, Walker might still be alive.

“It’s two people that murdered my brother-in-law, not just the perp, but [police] because, at some point, you should have called that chase off. You should have called it off. You should have stopped it,” said Hope Davis, the victim’s sister-in-law, ABC 7 reports.

“I watched my mother cry. I watched my siblings cry. And they shouldn’t. My father should be here. They shouldn’t have to cry,” the victim’s daughter, Jaime Walker, told the outlet.

Community activist Najee Ali told reporters at a news conference last week that police are partly responsible for Walker’s death for failing to apprehend a high-risk suspect like Reneau before the disastrous chain of events.

“We’re here because we’re outraged,” said Ali, speaking on behalf of members of Walker’s family, per The Times. “We’re outraged that Mr. Walker was killed by a carjacker [who] never should’ve been allowed to get into the car, because he was under surveillance by the LAPD. The LAPD saw him leave his residence, get into his car, and then engage in a pursuit. This pursuit tragically and unfortunately killed Mr. Walker.”

While the incident is reportedly under investigation by the LAPD’s Multi-Discipline Collision Investigation Team, Walker’s family has called on California Attorney General Rob Bonta to launch an independent investigation into his death.

As reported by The Times, LAPD spokesperson Capt. Kelly Muniz said in a statement that its officials were “committed to Reneau’s prosecution and would continue to support the Walker family in any way we possibly can.”

Reneau has been charged with murder for Walker’s death. In addition, he faces charges of assault on a peace officer, carjacking, possessing a firearm by a felon, and fleeing a pursuing officer’s vehicle.
Sutherland, the driver of the Prius, was also arrested on a felony evasion charge.
