CARSON CITY, Nev. -- A Nevada couple was found secretly keeping a cache of weapons and living with their two kids at a northern Nevada children’s museum where they worked, authorities said.
A janitor at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada was arrested late last week, ? KRNV-TV in Reno ? reported Friday. The 41-year-old man has been charged with child neglect and endangerment and possession of a suppressor and a short barrel rifle.
Authorities discovered the arsenal in a storage room, they said. A police report listed an AK-47 rifle, three handguns, a pistol, ammunition, knives and a taser that could have been reached by a child. The stash also included drug paraphernalia like a bong and a used marijuana joint.
Officials realized the family was living in the museum after the man's 2-year-old child was spotted walking nearby unsupervised, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office said. It was not the first time police interacted with the man over his child being left alone. But this time, the toddler's older sister gave deputies the museum as their address.
Authorities, along with a museum board member, then walked through the property and saw signs people had been living there. Sleeping bags, mattresses, clothes and food were among the items found in areas off-limits to visitors, the sheriff's office said.
The janitor's wife, a museum manager, was also living there, investigators said. But they did not identify her or say if she would face any charges.
The couple has since been fired and the museum closed.
The museum's board of directors is facing questions about how this was able to happen. The group issued an apology and said they were “shocked and saddened.”
“We are looking into the best path to reopen in a way that not only assures the safety of all of our visitors, but that we as a community can be proud of as well,” they said in a statement.
The museum will reopen after hiring a new manager. But that won't be good enough for some parents.

Leah Tsuchimoto, who works at a nearby hotel, told the TV station she will never take her children there again. The entire ordeal has been “a complete shock,” she said.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Late last week 41-year-old Wilbert Calhoun was arrested following a call to the Carson City Sheriff's Office (CCSO) that a two-year-old was walking around unsupervised near the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada (CMNN) in Carson City.
CCSO said that this was not the first time they have received a call to this same area involving Calhoun and his unsupervised child. This time, CCSO, said the child had crossed East Ann Street -- not far off from the busy street of North Carson.
When deputies made contact with Calhoun, CCSO said, he claimed he did not live in the museum. However, the child's older sister, when asked what her address was, told deputies the family lived in the museum.
One of CMNN's board members arrived on the scene, according to CCSO, where they all walked through the museum and found signs of people living there.

Wilbert Calhoun

CCSO said some of what was found in the building were sleeping bags, food, clothes, and mattresses. CCSO did not have info on how many people were actually staying there, but a nearby business claims there were around five kids and two adults occupying the building.
The wife, whose name is unknown at this time, was the manager at CMNN and Calhoun was the museum's janitor according to CCSO -- both of whom have been terminated.
CCSO deputies informed Calhoun of his lack of supervision of his two-year-old put them in danger. CCSO said they then arrested Calhoun and while delivering him to jail they were informed that marijuana and weapons were found in a storage room -- which was not far off from a room with art supplies.
A report from CCSO claimed that the room “could easily be accessed by a wandering child."
In the storage room, CCSO reported that the following was found:
  • An AK-47
  • Three handguns
  • An AR-style pistol
  • Ammunition, with dozens of magazines
  • Knives
  • A baton
  • A bong
  • A used marijuana joint
  • A taser
  • Pepper Spray
  • Three suppressors
Per CCSO, the wife has not been arrested and they are not sure about the state of the children at this time. News 4 & Fox 11 reached out to the Carson City District Attorney's Office for an update on Calhoun, a mugshot, his bond, and the latest on the children's access to protective care.
We have not heard back at this time.
Calhourn has been charged with the following crimes:
  • Child Neglect/Endangerment
  • Three counts of possessing a suppressor
  • Two counts of possessing a short barrel rifle
News 4 & Fox 11 spoke with an employee at the Hardman House, Leah Tsuchimoto, who said she has taken her kids to the museum before but will never do that again.
The Hardman House is directly north of CMNN and they often recommended the museum to families staying in Carson City looking for things to do.
Tsuchimoto said that's not a recommendation they can give anymore especially since she was uncomfortable before the incident late last week involving Calhoun.
"There was a lot of other things that made me feel a little insecure about the place, like especially bringing the one-year-old there. Because I felt like there was a couple of more choking hazards that they didn't pay attention to. And so with them, obviously not caring about what they had in the building. The general manager wasn't even caring enough about what was there for the kids to play with. But it was a complete shock," said Tsuchimoto.
The Hardman House said they have seen odd activity at the museum before, Tsuchimoto added,
I'm just seeing the lights on and it's late at night-- like I get off at 11 o'clock at night. And so I would still see lights on in the back parts of the building. And I thought that would be odd. If there wasn't technically nobody was supposed to be there because they were closed. That would be hours after they closed. And so I thought that was odd. And then just the amount of cops being frequently called there recently started getting more and more odd. And it just seemed to put puzzles together.
The News 4 & Fox 11 Team reached out to the Board of Directors that oversee CMNN for a response to the news, here is their response:
To all of the members and visitors to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, we would like to offer our most sincere apologies for the incident that came to light on June 30th. We are shocked and saddened that this happened on our watch, and we are working hard to make sure that nothing like this will ever happen again.
We are looking into the best path to reopen in a way that not only assures the safety of all of our visitors, but that we as a community can be proud of as well.
Thanks for your patience and support during this trying time for all of us.

Posted on the museum's door is a notification that the building is closed until the team can find a new manager.
