Big Macs to big Macks for Melton woman

25 Jun 2011

SERVING your country in Afghanistan is a far cry from flipping burgers.

Former McDonald’s restaurant manager Christina Walsh has traded in her apron for camouflage gear as she prepares for deployment to Afghanistan with the Australian Army.

The Melton resident will have her Australian Active Service Medal in time for the next Anzac Day. “My mum and dad are a bit worried, so I’m trying not to scare them,” Private Walsh said.

“But I’ve always wanted to do something different, to get away and have adventures.

“Now I’m a specialist transport driver for Macks to Unimogs to utes, you name it.”

Soon Private Walsh will be one of 1550 Australian soldiers stationed in Uruzgan province to help train Afghan soldiers and to restore peace. “The training has been great, learning what it’s really going to be like,” she said.

“Over there my job will be driving replenishment missions to the forward bases. There might be roadside bombs, but I’ll be in a Bushmaster, which is very heavily armoured.”

Private Walsh will return home in September just in time for her partner Nathan’s 30th birthday.

“We’re planning to buy a house, but first we’ll be heading to the (Golden) Fleece (Hotel) for a beer or two,” she said.
