A Norfolk mother is charged with felony child abuse after police say they found opiates in her young son’s system.
Tracie Marie Chaffee, 29, of the 800 block of W. 41st Street, was arrested Friday, the same day the two-year-old boy was taken to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.
According to the search warrant, paramedics were called to Chaffee's home to assist her son, who was non-responsive. The boy was transferred to the hospital, where it was discovered that he had opiates in his system.
Police are not saying how the boy ingested the drug, but according to the search warrant, Chaffee told investigators that she did use heroin, but not in the home.
Three adults were home with the toddler before the incident, including Chaffee's boyfriend Aric Lamont Gardner, Sr. Tracie reportedly left her son in the care of Gardner when she went to work the night before
Police are trying to find 35-year-old Gardner. He’s known to hang out in Norfolk and Portsmouth.

Police have arrested a woman and charged her with Felony Child Abuse after what police describe as a "controlled substance" was discovered in the system of her tw0-year-old son.
According to police, emergency personnel were called to a residence on W. 41st Street early Friday morning. As a result of the call, the two-year-old was transported to Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters for treatment. While there, medical personnel discovered the "controlled substance" in the bloodstream of the toddler.
As a result, police arrested the boy's mother and charged her.
She's been identified as 29-year-old Tracie Chaffee.
Police are currently looking for her boyfriend for the same charge.
He is 35-years-old Aric Lamont Gardner, Sr. He's described as a black male, 6' 1" tall; weighing about 165. He is known to frequent Portsmouth and Norfolk areas;
