A Baltimore City police officer was convicted Tuesday for insurance fraud involving his deceased grandfather.

The state attorney general's office announced the conviction of Derek D. Hayes, of Baltimore, for insurance fraud in which he lied to State Farm Insurance Companies in an attempt to support a false claim for a laptop computer.

br>Prosecutors presented evidence that Hayes lied during insurance company interviews while submitting his claim. He told the insurance company that his car was broken into and a laptop computer given to hi

his deceased grandfather had been stolen.

Haynes h
ad reported a stolen laptop on Oct. 10, 2002, according to the attorney general's office.

During the interviews in October 2002, Hayes described the computer and said that he used it during his patrol work as an officer. He also told conflicting information about the date that his grandfather passed away.

Authorities interviewed Hayes' colleagues and could not substantiate Hayes' claim that he used a laptop computer while on duty. Also, Maryland State Police documents submitted by Haynes to support his claim found that the laptop computer could not have been produced before July 2001.

The judge in the case ordered the Division of Parole and Probation to conduct a pre-sentence investigation of Haynes, who will
then face a scheduled sentencing date on June 11.
