A MUSLIM cleric has reached an out-of-court settlement with the publisher of The Daily Telegraph over claims the newspaper accused him of having links to terrorism.
NSW prison chaplain Anwar Al Barq had launched legal action against Nationwide News, the publisher of The Daily Telegraph, over a series of articles printed in November 2005.
Al Barq claimed the articles had damaged his reputation and carried the imputation he had links to terrorist groups.
He also argued the articles carried the imputation that during his time as a prison chaplain he was in regular contact with two former inmates who, at the time of publication, faced trial in Jordan for an alleged terrorist attack.
But on the first day of a two-day Supreme Court hearing, Justice Michael Adams this afternoon dismissed the four-person jury, announcing the parties had reached an out-of-court settlement.
In 2005, the NSW Department of Corrective Services banned Al Barq from working as a prison chaplain after it was discovered he had used a false name to conceal a criminal record, which included periods in jail in both the United States and Australia.
