Alexandria halts flying of Confederate flags

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Historic Alexandria has for years allowed the flying of Confederate flags on Jan. 19 to mark the birthday of Civil War general and native hero Robert E. Lee.

Not so this year. During President Barack Obama's inauguration in mid-January, there were no stars and bars in sight.

The local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy has had an agreement with the city for more than three decades to hang three of the flags at an intersection in Old Town.

But the city said in a letter this year that it would not post them because its resources were being used to address "inaugural traffic and crowd control, access and security issues."

The flags represent the first national flag of the confederacy, also known as the Stars and Bars, not
the controversial battle flag with the well-known cross of stars.
