Alabama Voters Reject Change to State Constitution Which Calls for Racially Segregated Schools

Last week voters in Alabama were asked to decide whether they should change the wording in the state constitution which calls for separate schools for "white and colored children." This provision of the Alabama constitution was invalidated by the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. Yet it still remains on the books as the official law of the state.

The results are in but it appears that a recount will be necessary in order to determine if the amendment to the constitution was approved. Returns on Election Day showed that the amendment was narrowly defeated by a margin of less than 3,000 votes. More than 690,000 Alabama
voters opposed the change to the constitution which would have remo
ved the racist clause.
