INDIANAPOLIS – A fingerprint recovered from the scene of a sexual assault led investigators to arrest a suspected serial rapist, according to court records.
Darrell Goodlow is accused of six sexual assaults involving eight victims over the span of more than a year.
The suspect was tracked down to a home on Indy’s east side and arrested on Friday.
While we aren’t releasing the specific locations of those crimes, all but one of those victims lived less than two miles from the suspect’s home.
The first case was reported in Aug. 2020; the most recent one took place in September 2021.
According to the affidavit, police found Goodlow’s fingerprint at the most recent rape scene, which took place just two weeks ago.
That allowed the county crime lab to secure a warrant for Goodlows DNA, which matched evidence collected from all eight victims.
In all six cases, women reported they’d been raped by an “unknown Black male.” In several of the cases, the man was armed with a knife and threatened to kill the victim, according to court documents.
The FBI and Lawrence Police Department assisted in the investigation.
“It likely isn’t the full picture that there was just these eight victims,” said Laura Palumbo.
Laura Palumbo, with the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, wonders if there could be additional victims because rape often goes unreported.
“Sexual assault is the most underreported violent crime,” said Palumbo. “It’s also not uncommon for there to be a pattern of multiple victims, if someone hasn’t faced any consequences for previous sexual assaults.”
In fact, police reports show Goodlow was suspected of another rape in 2017, but was never charged or arrested for that crime.

Charges for Darrell Goodlow, 37, include 22 counts of rape, 10 charges of criminal confinement, four counts of strangulation, and one count of killing a domestic animal.

According to IMPD, the rapes under investigation were from August of 2020 to September of 2021. There were eight victims, ranging in age from 60 to 78.
A probable cause affidavit showed Goodlow sometimes used a knife in the attacks and asked almost all of the victims for money.
IMPD Deputy Chief Craig McCartt said in one of the attacks, Goodlow posed as a utility worker to try to gain access to the victim’s home. In another instance, he carried tools and equipment to appear as a tree trimmer.
“The suspect frequently used a ruse of some sort to try to gain entry into these homes,” said McCarrt.
In another attack, he knocked on the front door and forced his way through when the victim “turned around to get her hearing aids” according to court documents.
The victims all lived alone except for three who lived in the same home. The trio had a dog, and Goodlow is accused of killing it shortly upon entry. A necropsy of the dog showed it appeared to have died from blunt force trauma.
“He picked a vulnerable set of victims,” McCartt continued. Goodlow was able to spend several hours in each of the victims’ homes as there was no one else in the residence.
