3 darkies murder local contractor

Shooting victim described as helpful, generous neighbor; suspects sought

A Danville contractor died after being shot multiple times early Thursday morning following a confrontation with three suspects trespassing on his property, according to the Danville Police Department.

Bennie Wesley Sigmon, 48, was shot in his driveway at 2081 Rocklawn Place. Police responded to the residence at about 4:20 a.m. Thursday. He was taken to Danville Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 6:53 a.m., according to a news release from the police department.

Police said Sigmon went outside to confront three men who were trespassing on his property.

Neighbor Kenneth Terry said he was asleep when the incident occurred, but his nephew, who sleeps in a bedroom next to Sigmon’s house, heard the gunfire.

He described Sigmon as a helpful and generous neighbor who was even helping install a heater in Terry’s house. Terry, a painter, said he and Sigmon would often talk about their jobs before heading out in the morning.

Terry said he came home Monday to find his back door kicked in and described an incident where property was stolen from his house after his family was gone for an extended period. However, overall he described the neighborhood as peaceful.

“It’s a quiet street,” Terry said.

One of the men pulled out a handgun and shot the Sigmon multiple times, police said. Two of the suspects fled in a station wagon and one ran away on foot. The suspects are described as black males wearing dark hoodies. Police had no further details on the suspects Thursday or what led to the confrontation.
