ALFRED, N.Y. (WETM) — An Alfred State College student is in a coma and fighting for his life after college officials say he was attacked by four Elmira men just off campus on Oct. 15.
According to a gofundme set up by family friends and linked to by Alfred State College in a recent YouTube video, Derek Correa, a first-year student was put into a coma and sustained severe trauma after being attacked by four men.
The gofundme claims that Correa was attacked for no reason by the men as he was walking back to his dorm in the early morning of Oct. 15. The site claims that Correa is in the Intensive Care Unit in a coma with severe trauma to his face and brain.
The gofundme says that Derek’s family has been with him throughout his time in the hospital, but that meals, gas, lodging, medical bills, and other burdens will soon follow.

Nearly $40,000 has been raised in support of Derek and the family so far, after the creation of the donation site on Oct. 19.
Another fundraiser has been set up to help the family in the form of a take-out spaghetti dinner in November. The dinner will be held on Nov. 16 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 2530 River Road in Wellsville, NY.
The dinners are $15.00 and come with spaghetti and meatballs with bread, a side salad, and a cookie, purchases can be made with cash or check, and no reservations are needed. All of the proceeds from the dinner will go to the family to support Derek Correa.
In the video put out by Alfred State College, President Steven Mauro said that the college is staying in touch with the family that the support of the college is with them, and that updates on Correa’s health will be updated on the gofundme.
President Mauro stood strong in saying that violence is never an appropriate response for anything for any reason and that those who conduct such behaviors will be held accountable.

Alfred State College confirmed that the four men did not go to school at the college and that all four,
Moses N. Scharborough, 19,
William J. Blye, 20,
Jayson E. Lewis, 20,
Eric R. Plante, 19,

were arrested, and charged with one count of gang assault in the first degree with more charges expected to come.

ALFRED, N.Y. (WETM) — Four men from Elmira were arrested over the weekend after an incident at Alfred State College led to the assault of a student.
According to officials at Alfred State College, 19-year-old Moses N. Scharborough, 20-year-old William J. Blye, 20-year-old Jayson E. Lewis, and 19-year-old Eric R. Plante, all of Elmira, were arrested early Sunday, Oct. 15 after an assault that ended in a student being seriously injured.

In a statement released to the student body, Alfred State College President, Steven Mauro, condemned the attack and is holding the suspects accountable.
“Our student did not deserve to be assaulted, and no form of violence is ever an acceptable response to anything for any reason,” Mauro said. “The perpetrators of this assault, like anyone who commits violence, will be held accountable in the criminal justice system,” he said.
Mauro went on to say that the student who was attacked was hospitalized and is receiving medical care and support from their family.
As for the four men, college officials say all of them have been charged with one count of gang assault in the first degree, with more pending. Following the arrest, the men were seen by a judge and taken to the Allegany County Jail in lieu of bail.
