CHICAGO -- A 25-year-old woman was charged with leaving her 1-year-old daughter in a car, which was not running, while it was parked in the lot of a grocery store on Friday, police said.

Two Chicago police officers responded at about 6:20 p.m. to a call of a child left in a car at a Jewel parking lot in the 3500 block of North Kedzie Avenue, according to police News Affairs. In the parking lot, officers found a 1-year-old girl crying in a car seat in the back seat of a Nissan Sentra, which was not running.

Because of the extremely cold weather, the officers feared for the health of the girl and forced entry into the car through a window, News Affairs said. The girl was taken into protective custody and brought into the police vehicle for warmth.

Police arrested the mother, Heba Mohamed, when she and her 5-year-old son returned to the car about 10 minutes later. News Affairs Officer Kristina Schuler did not know how long Mohamed and her son had been in the store.

The girl was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital where she was treated for cold exposure and was in good condition, said Schuler, adding that the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was notified of the incident.

Mohamed, of the 3200 block of North Kostner Avenue, was charged with endangering the life/health of a child, a misdemeanor. She is slated to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, according to News Affairs.
