The second suspect in the slaying of 18-year-old Ashlynn Sparks pleaded guilty Wednesday to the 2016 killing that also wounded Sparks’ boyfriend. Courtney Brianna Devaughn, now 26, was initially charged with capital murder in Sparks’ death, which happened during a robbery in Lipscomb.

Last year, 26-year-old Adam Decoreyae Smith pleaded guilty to murder, and was sentenced to life in prison. Two other suspects, Richard Steven Martinez and Anthony Dewayne Smith, have not yet gone to trial.

Devaughn, whose alibi was that she was hanging Christmas lights at the time Sparks was killed, entered her plea to murder before Jefferson County Circuit Judge David Carpenter. She also pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the wounding of Sparks’ boyfriend, Jabarae Lagarde.

Devaughn was sentenced to 20 years in prison with five to actually serve. Once released from the Alabama Department of Corrections, Devaughn will be on probation for five years during which time she is ordered to remain drug-free and maintain full-time employment or school.

According to the plea agreement, she must also be available to testify truthfully in any upcoming trials in the case.
