WATCH: Suspect Released From Hospital After Shooting 6 Philadelphia Police Officers In Hours-Long Standoff; Lawyer Identifies Suspect As 36-Year-Old Maurice Hill
By CBS3 Staff
August 15, 2019 at 9:55 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A gunman was taken into custody after he allegedly shot six Philadelphia police officers in the city’s Nicetown-Tioga section on Wednesday. The suspect surrendered to police shortly after midnight, following more than a seven-hour standoff. Eyewitness News is told 36-year-old Maurice Hill is the suspected shooter, according to his lawyer Shaka Johnson.

Johnson says Hill was not injured in the shootout. However, Hill was taken to the hospital for a checkup and released around 3 a.m. Eyewitness News was there as officers escorted him out.

Although police have not officially identified Hill as the suspect, a source has sent Eyewitness News his prior mugshot.

His lawyer tells CBS3 Hill called him to the scene of the standoff while he was barricaded inside.

“Maurice called me in a panic, obviously. He did not want this to end violently and he really was sort of taking an opportunity to speak his peace. I told him, ‘You gotta surrender, man,'” Johnson told CBS3’s Greg Argos.

Johnson says he first received a call from Hill around 8:30 p.m., hours after the shooting broke out and the officers were shot.

Charges have yet to be announced.

All six police officers were released from the hospital Wednesday night. A seventh officer, who was injured in a car crash while responding to the scene on the 3700 block of North 15th Street, remains in the hospital. That officer’s condition is not known.

It all started around 4:30 p.m. when police were serving a narcotics warrant when the suspect opened fire. Johnson says he does not know at this time if Hill was the target of that warrant.

As police exchanged gunfire inside the house, officers escaped through windows and doors. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross added that it was a miracle officers weren’t killed during the incident.

CBS3 reports 30 officers discharged their weapons during the shootout. Volleys of gunfire erupted throughout the evening as the gunman continued to fire at police.

“Let’s be clear, the police did an awesome job today. They were very patient, this had been going on for hours,” Johnson said. “Commissioner Ross could have pushed a button long before he did, quite frankly. So I want to give credit to the police for having some sort of patience with all of this … This could have gone very badly earlier in the day.”

Sources tell CBS3 the suspect was live-streaming some of the shootout while he barricaded himself inside the home. However, Hill’s lawyer disputes those claims.

Two officers, who were trapped on the second floor of the residence, were released, along with three hostages, while police say the gunman remained on the first floor.

Additionally, two women and two children were escorted by SWAT and Philadelphia Police from the scene. They told CBS3 that they were inside the home on the second floor at the time of the shootout and that police saved them.

Chopper 3 was over the scene where earlier in the day, police could be seen taking another suspect into custody. It’s not clear what his role was in the incident.

Temple University issued a lockdown as the situation developed and children at two nearby day care centers were moved to safe locations.

The shooting and massive police presence shut down large portions of North Philadelphia and disrupted SEPTA routes.

Police activity in the area has Erie Avenue closed between Broad Street and Hunting Park Avenue on Thursday morning. Broad Street, between Hunting Park Avenue and Allegheny Avenue, has since reopened.

SEPTA says the Broad Street Line service has resumed but bus routes 23, 53, 56, H and HX will remain detoured until further notice.

CBS3 Learning Details Of Suspect Maurice Hill’s Lengthy Criminal History Following Hours-Long Shootout With Philadelphia Police
By CBS3 Staff
August 15, 2019 at 7:00 am

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – CBS3 is learning the lengthy criminal history of Maurice Hill, the suspected gunman who allegedly shot six Philadelphia police officers during an hours-long standoff in the city’s Nicetown-Tioga section on Wednesday. Hill has a long criminal history dating back to 2000, including several gun charges as well as drug and assault charges.

Hill surrendered to police shortly after midnight, following a standoff that lasted seven hours.

Eyewitness News spoke to his attorney, Shaka Johnson. He says Hill was not injured in the shootout.

However, he was taken to the hospital for a checkup and Eyewitness News was there as officers escorted him out around 3 a.m. on Thursday.

Although police have not officially identified Hill as the suspect, a source has sent Eyewitness News a prior mugshot of Hill.

Johnson says Hill called him to the scene of the standoff while he was barricaded inside.

“Maurice called my phone and was like ‘I’m in a situation, I need your help.’ We talked about you gotta come out, you know?” Johnson said. “The first thing I said was is there anything I can do for you with respect to contacting anyone. The next thing we did was contact the powers to be and get in touch with DA Krasner, Commissioner Ross to see if we can stand down because he’s talking now. Enough people had been hurt for the day and all eyes and quite frankly all barrels at this hour were on Maurice and we wanted to make sure this ended normally.”

It all started around 4:30 p.m. when police were serving a narcotics warrant and the suspect opened fire. Johnson says he does not know at this time if Hill was the target of that warrant.

As police exchanged gunfire inside the house, officers escaped through windows and doors. Police Commissioner Richard Ross added that it was a miracle officers weren’t killed during the incident.

All six police officers were released from the hospital Wednesday night. A seventh officer, who was injured in a car crash while responding to the scene on the 3700 block of North 15th Street, remains in the hospital. That officer’s condition is not known.

Additionally, two women and two children were escorted by SWAT and Philadelphia Police from the scene. They told CBS3 that they were inside the home on the second floor at the time of the shootout and that police saved them.

There were reports last night that Hill was live streaming the shootout and standoff on social media, but Johnson disputes those claims.

Crowd Taunts Philadelphia Police Officers, Laugh At Them In Midst Of Gunfire During Standoff In Nicetown-Tioga
By CBS3 Staff
August 14, 2019 at 11:30 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — While Philadelphia police officers were dealing with a gunman who shot six of their own during a standoff at a home in the Nicetown-Tioga section, cops also had to deal with being taunted by some bystanders. CBS3’s Alexandria Hoff reports a crowd of people laughed and yelled at officers in the midst of gunfire during a standoff on Wednesday.

Police say officers were serving a narcotics warrant on the 3700 block of North 15th Street around 4:30 p.m. when the suspect opened fire. As police exchanged gunfire, officers escaped through windows and doors.

Six officers were shot and transported to local hospitals. The officers have since been released.

From 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., gunfire did not cease for more than 40 minutes at a time. For some, the near constant sound of shots felt like nothing more than a reality of where they live, and for others it brought back memories of a war zone.

“It’s unsafe, but this is the hood. This is what we live with everyday,” one woman said.

“When they started dumping with the firepower and stuff like that, they did it in front of the day care, the babies were out and everything, that’s crazy. I’m a discharged veteran. I thought I was in a DMZ zone. It’s triggering PTSD, all types of things, all of this needs to be resolved. It’s senseless, seriously senseless,” another woman said.

Sources tell CBS3 that the scene was sheer chaos as officers were taking fire. Video from Chopper 3 showed officers with guns drawn at the scene.

Sources tell CBS3 the suspect was live-streaming some of the shootout while he barricaded himself inside the home.

Police say the gunman surrendered and was taken into custody shortly after midnight.

U.S. Attorney McSwain blasts DA Krasner after Philadelphia shooting

Thursday, August 15, 2019 12:52PM
PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia's top federal prosecutor says the shooting of six police officers during a 7 1/2-hour standoff was precipitated by a disrespect for law enforcement that the city's district attorney is championing.

U.S. Attorney William McSwain said Thursday in a news release that disrespect puts police in danger.

The top prosecutors have a sharp ideological divide. McSwain is a President Donald Trump appointee and Jew Larry Krasner is a longtime civil rights lawyer.

McSwain has previously questioned Krasner's commitment to crime victims.

An email seeking comment was sent to Krasner.

The six officers had non-life-threatening injuries and have been released from the hospital. The suspected gunman is in custody after surrendering.

READ: Statement by United States Attorney William M. McSwain on the shooting of six Philadelphia police officers:

What I witnessed last night was true heroism by the Philadelphia police. But the crisis was precipitated by a stunning disrespect for law enforcement - a disrespect so flagrant and so reckless that the suspect immediately opened fire on every single officer within shooting distance. Only by the grace of God did they survive.

Where does such disrespect come from?

There is a new culture of disrespect for law enforcement in this City that is promoted and championed by District Attorney Larry Krasner - and I am fed up with it.

It started with chants at the DA's victory party - chants of "F*** the police" and "No good cops in a racist system."

We've now endured over a year and a half of the worst kinds of slander against law enforcement - the DA routinely calls police and prosecutors corrupt and racist, even "war criminals" that he compares to Nazis.

This vile rhetoric puts our police in danger. It disgraces the Office of the District Attorney. And it harms the good people in the City of Philadelphia and rewards the wicked.

The alleged shooter last night, Maurice Hill, is a previously convicted felon with a long rap sheet. We have plenty of criminal laws in this City - but what we don't have is robust enforcement by the District Attorney. Instead, among other things, we have diversionary programs for gun offenses, the routine downgrading of charges for violent crime, and entire sections of the criminal code that are ignored.

The criminal laws in this City - and especially the existing gun laws and drug laws - should be aggressively enforced in order to protect the public and the police. My Office is doing all that we can. We have prosecuted 70% more violent crime cases this year than we did last year, in response to the District Attorney's lawlessness. But it is now time for the District Attorney and his enablers to stop making excuses for criminals. It is time for accountability. It is time to support law enforcement and to put the good people of this City first.

The U.S. Attorney's Office, in conjunction with the Philadelphia police and our federal partners, is investigating the horrible events of last night and we are considering all options at our disposal. We will do everything that we can to support our brothers and sisters in the Philadelphia Police Department and ensure justice is done.

To the officers involved last night - those who were wounded and those who rushed to defend them - and to their families, I say thank you. The whole City thanks you. We owe you more than we can ever repay.

Organizers Say Hundreds Expected To Attend Rally To Support Suspect Accused Of Shooting 6 Philadelphia Police Officers
By CBS3 Staff
August 16, 2019 at 12:50 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A controversial  protest is planned Friday night in North Philadelphia to support Maurice Hill, the alleged  gunman accused of shooting six Philadelphia police officers. Organizers say they expect 200 to 300 alleged people to rally tonight.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross says police will be there too.

“Sadly, we do have to be there, I don’t understand it. There’s certain marches I do understand, this is definitely not one of them,” Ross said.

Hill is still in jail right now while he waits to be arraigned.

Philadelphia commie joo District Attorney Larry Krasner said Thursday Hill will most likely face charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault, among others.

“There will be a lot of charges. These are more than enough charges so that Mr. Maurice Hill may never exit jail,” Krasner said.

All six police officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were released from the hospital Wednesday night.

Commie joo Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner negotiated a “phony baloney” sentence with the gunman in the harrowing 7 1/2-hour standoff that ended with six cops shot.

Krasner jumped on the phone with suspect Maurice Hill while he was holding three people hostage Wednesday night, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Hill wanted to know what kind of punishment he was facing.

“Early on, I said 25 [years], then he said 20 and I said OK,” Krasner told the paper.

But it was all a ruse, designed to talk the gunman down.

“We need to be clear here: This was bulls–t from the beginning,” Krasner said.

Krasner reportedly took the call around 9 p.m. at the request of Hill’s attorney, who was conferenced in. Krasner took a second call from Hill around 10:15 with multiple prosecutors listening.

“When [Hill] started talking about things that those of us in the business knew could not happen, [Krasner] did not thwart the negotiations by shutting him down immediately, nor did he promise him anything that ultimately couldn’t get done,” attorney Shaka Johnson told the Inquirer. “But he did allow that man, in his mind, to keep things in play so that he could come out of there.”

Hill appeared to be intoxicated or under the influence of prescription drugs during the standoff, Krasner said.

“I would have gone roller skating with the man if that would have gotten him out of there,” he quipped.

Prosecutors File 62 Additional Attempted Murder Charges Against Man Accused Of Shooting 6 Philadelphia Police Officers During Standoff
By CBS3 Staff
December 19, 2019 at 4:20 pm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Prosecutors have filed dozens of new charges against a man accused of shooting six Philadelphia police officers during an hours-long standoff in August. The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office says Maurice Hill will face an additional 62 attempted murder charges for shooting at officers.

“Our office does not level these new allegations lightly. Prosecutors reviewed a thorough investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department, which included hundreds of interviews with responding police officers. These 62 officers did not sustain gunshot wounds, but they were all fired upon by Hill,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement.

Police say Hill shot six officers, held two others hostage and fired dozens of rounds at police during the seven-hour standoff in Nicetown-Tioga.

The officers were not seriously injured.

Hill was in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing that lasted nearly four hours. During the hearing, several officers presented gripping testimony about what went on during the shootout and how they escaped.

Officer Shaun Parker, who first entered Hill’s home, said in his testimony that police used a ram to get through the front door. Parker entered the kitchen when he was struck on his left side and retreated.

“I immediately saw a flash and I knew I was shot. I took cover, began firing into the kitchen. I was trying to figure out how I was going to get out of the house. It was constant gunfire from the kitchen,” Parker told the judge.

Parker eventually broke a window with his gun, climbed out and ran to a patrol car.

However, Edward Meehan, Hill’s defense attorney, pointed out that police didn’t have a search warrant for Hill’s home. Hill’s defense also asked Parker if he or anyone yelled police before entering the house. Parker didn’t remember.

Four other people also face charges in connection to the standoff.
